about

Montezuma's Revenge was a jam band fusing rock, funk, and jazz and was active in Bloomington, Indiana and Indianapolis from 2006-2007.

Driven by the Radiohead-influenced songs of Dallas Moorhead, plus arrangements of songs by Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and others, the music blended heated improvisation, raw funk, and thundering rock beats, alternating the spotlight between angsty, evocative lyrics and firey saxophone leads.

Aside from a handful of other Bloomington rock, funk, and blues groups (especially Blue Moon Revue, Eggie and the Timers, Goza, Piney Woods, and various wedding and party bands), Montezuma's Revenge was one of my first opportunities to assume a major role in a rock band on saxophone. Besides soloing at length, my other main task was to interpret melodies like a vocalist. The rhythm section's modus operandi was to rock as hard and loud as possible. MR was a fun party band that took a few steps beyond in originality and depth.
