about

Art Deco Quartet was a pianoless quartet based in Bloomington, Indiana, led by trumpeter David Miller.

After an initial performance at the now long defunct Gallery West, Miller and I felt extremely enthusiastic about the possibilities and decided to make the band an ongoing project. The group performed locally and steadily throughout 2005-2007.

Modeled very much after Ornette Coleman's bands from the 1950s and 1960s, with color and an emotional palette similar to 1960s ESP Disk and Blue Note avant garde releases, Art Deco explored a range of free bop, free jazz, and structured free improvisations. The band combined originals by David Miller with free leaning gems selected from a large repertoire, including tunes by Ornette Coleman, Carla Bley, Albert Ayler, Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Grachan Moncur III, Duke Ellington, early Keith Jarrett, and others.

On a personal level, Art Deco was a key component in my musical growth and development at the time, providing me a huge amount of freedom to explore and work on ideas and languages within a variety of structures. Some of my favorite personal musical moments happened in this group.
