about

I first played with Calvin, Sean, and James as part of Adam Minkoff's and my rendering of John Coltrane's "Ascension" in 2015.

After recording the next year with Sean and James on my second album for Destiny Records, "Dialogical", I wanted to create a band that explored the chemistry of the three horns with a harmolodic rhythm section of Bern Nix and Calvin Weston, two master improvisers who played in Ornette Coleman's Prime Time band. As a long time fan of Ornette Coleman's music, the gig also seemed like an ideal opportunity to dig into a few Ornette related tunes and play them with alumni of his band.

I had been playing with Bern Nix in Cheryl Pyle's free improvised Beyond Group for two to three years prior, and I was curious what his voice might sound like interacting with more conventional jazz orchestration. My friend and colleague Brad Whiteley rounded out the group on organ. This was the first gig of the group, and I probably would have continued the harmolodic band with Bern, but he passed away before that could take place.

This recording is an iPhone capture and is presented as is, in lo fi. I did not have the presence of mind to record the gig, and as it turns out, Brad Whiteley did. I am grateful to him for recording the gig!
